Are there any similar games to Recettear on the PC?

Similar as in, JRPG type games with similar gameplay (but not the shop, because that's unique to recettear)?

Hell with that, I'd like to know if there's any good shop games as well. I love the marketing aspect of Recettear... I am a Capitalist after all. ;-)

But yeh, any games similar in general would be fun, all these genres/categories are new to me. I never played a Market game in this way, or a JRPG, or even many Dungeon games where I get to decide how to sell the loot.

If you don't mind western games, the dungeon crawler was pretty much perfected by Diablo 2. Of course, that's a very old game. You may also want to try torchlight, which was made by the same people. Both of those are on the PC. If you have a PS2, Recettear really reminded me of the Dark Cloud games. There is absolutely no shortage of Dungeon Crawlers. If you want an FPS Dungeon Crawler (I know, I'm stretching the question a bit), you may have heard about Borderlands which I highly recommend playing with a friend. As far as JRPGs go, if you've never played a Dragon Quest game, treat yourself and get acquainted with the series. I'm sure you've probably at least heard of or played some of these, but I may be able to think of more games.

Thanks for the info. I know most or all of the games you mentioned, but I was really hoping there would be more translated games like this one (for the PC). I've played (and finished) Diablo 2, Sacred, FATE (not Torchlight because that's just a copy of FATE), Titan Quest and many others, but am looking for something lighter and more superficial, very much like the JRPGs you get on consoles.

I would recommend Torchlight though. It's much more a clone of Diablo than Fate(though  I can see the similarities). If you just want to know some JRPGs on the PC, you can try some of the games by Leaf, if you don't mind a bit of porn mixed in. I played Utawarerumono all the way through, and enjoyed it quite a bit. I haven't tried it yet, but they also made Tears to Tiara. Both of these are tactical games though. There's another one with an English patch out that I've been looking to try called Farland Symphony. I assume that you'd want them available to you in English, so you might want to check out http://mirrormoon.org/ for patches.

I didn't like Torchlight much, but that's very possibly because it just copied FATE in almost every aspect of the game, except for some updated graphics and new monsters.

Porn is a no; I don't like porn in general and certainly wouldn't want it in my games.

Farland Symphony looks pretty good, and I'm certainly in for tactical rpgs as well! Looking online, Farland Symphony got some not so great reviews, but it did lead me to some other titles: Rance, Big Bang Age and Eien no Aselia, which look great. Thanks :-)

Edit: It appears those games contain porn too. Although Eien no Aselia has a 12+ version as well.

Porn does not concern me, as long as it doesn't TAKE from the gameplay. That said, all I've seen suggested thus far is RPG/JRPG, no one mentioned any games with similar concepts (marketing in particular). But, I didn't expect there to be many similar games to begin with. I never was one to play popular games, graphics games, shoot 'em up games, Dungeon games, or most games in general, it's mostly the odd ones that catch my eye, games with something new to offer. Like when 1602 A.D. came out, I was amazed, still like that game, Harvest Moon 64 was great too.

Honestly, I don't know of many games that focus on selling things like Recettear does. Most of the games I can think of are more focused on getting the loot then just selling everything you don't use. Harvest Moon was the only similar-ish kind of game I can think of. I've never tried it, but Rune Factory(Harvest Moon+dungeon crawler) was supposed to be pretty good. Another game I might recommend(cause it's kinda different) would be Mount & Blade. It's a sort of medieval game with very open ended goals. While the focus is still pretty much on combat, you do have to worry about upkeep and can make money through trading between the different towns.

As for Buck, sorry bout that, but most of what get's translated of the PC JRPGs include porn in some form or another. Though, in my experience, most games like that also include a skip feature and can be perfectly competent without the porn. I know it's not much consolation. If you want, you can always download one of those sprite-based RPG makers and try your hand at that. Those are pretty fun.

Thanks a lot oishi, I don't usually follow up on anything unless it catches my attention. When you mentioned Harvest Moon, Rune Factory kinda did. I just found out it's also made by Natsume, so no doubt it uses same engine as some HM games. I bookmarked the Natsume Wiki Page in fact, I'll look it over later, I got stuff to do atm, plenty Anime to watch, I work a lot, and I am aiming at moving to a new job soon perhaps, heh. Thanks for info tho.

well... from the screenshots alone, I can tell that RF is a complete Knock-Off of Harvest Moon. The Farming techniques are beyond similar, though I expect the other elements to be much different (less pointless Recipe collecting, more pointless ass-kicking). I'll try it someday, I don't do Console Games in general, so I'll see when I can get around to trying it. Looks fun though!

Harvest Moon Grand Bazaar has you running an.... ITEM SHOP. It's not a daily thing though like in Recettear, you (and the rest of the town) set up shop at the end of the week in a bazaar.

It comes out this month.

This is an unfortunate problem endemic to the modern Japanese gaming culture; to put it plainly, the Japanese think the PC is a niche gaming system so they need something more than just game to draw customers. I think with the success of games like Touhou, Recettear, Higurashi, etc. that sell solely on the strength of being good games has affected this, but there's a lot of traction in the other direction... and, to be frank, it does sell.

There's a number of good, even great Japanese PC games that are spoiled because of this, and it frustrates me to no end. Thankfully, EasyGameStation does not and has never included questionable material in their titles, which gives me some hope.

(Also, Rune Factory is fun and definitely something I would recommend anyone interested by the concept giving a shot.)
