How do you cast spells?

I'm very early on in the game, but I was wondering how to cast spells as Sana? I've been googling and testing things out, but I can't seem to figure it out. :/
Running through water with enemies would be a lot easier if I could cast.

Make sure the spells you want to use are active in the current book (I've never had reason to seperate the spells into various books, I just put all active spells in Book A), then make sure the one you want is selected (it will be indicated in the upper-right), then hold down the spell cast button until the magic circle is fully charged and release to cast the spell. Alternatively, you can press up/down (IIRC) before releasing to change the target of the spell if it's a target-able spell.
