Woah! Xseed w/Ys on Steam!?
« on: March 13, 2012, 06:31:08 PM »
Xseed is bringing Ys to Steam this Monday!?!? WOAH! Trails in the Sky next, folks?!

All of a sudden I feel a weird desire to go watch the Kamichu anime. That's probably a separate topic.

Cheers,

-mra

I had originally been planning to get Oath in Felghana for my PSP, but Steam is good also.

I'm not really sure if I'll enjoy it, though; the one Ys-like game I've played had decently enjoyable combat, but I hated the platforming.

It's a pretty interesting turn of events. I've never played any Ys game before, maybe I'll get a chance with these sometime later.

I am beyond excited that Ys Origin is finally being released here after all this time.  I already own the game in Japanese but will certainly buy it again when it hits Steam.

... and maybe I'll actually kill that damned crab boss this time...

My God.... WHAT? It's... this true? It's... it's glorious.

I love you 2012. You're justifying my gaming PCs and my attempt to move into the PC gaming world despite my errr, sorts Eastern tastes.

Remember when Steam had like... no remotely Japanese or anime or Asian games for that matter?

Now I own Recettear, Chantelise, Fortune Summoners, Cave Story, The Last Remnant, Gundemonium Collection, Super Street Fighter IV, Satazius, Sonic Generations, Sonic 1 - Knuckles, Sonic CD, Sonic Adventure DX, Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I, Sonic and SEGA All-Stars Racing, Final Fantasy XI, Silent Hill: Homecoming, PixelJunk Eden, Onimusha 3...

And very soon, this year, I'm going to be buying the eXceed Collection, Cherry Tree High Comedy Club, Fighting Fairy, ETHER VAPOR, Street Fighter x Tekken, and apparently, Ys. And maybe if I'm lucky, those Dark Souls folks will get Namco to bringing a lot of their titles to Steam, and Rockin' Android will bring more of their titles to Steam.

Not to mention we're going to get another game from Carpe Fulgur before the end of 2012. Somebody pinch me.

Excuse me, while I go prepare my money canon.

I just read on the XSEED forums that this is one of those things that SpaceDrake has been itching to tell us.

In other news, so excited! YES!

Between this, Fortune Summoners, and Nyu-media's upcoming titles... this is a good year to be a gamer who likes Japanese games :D

Now we just need to know what CF are doing next... *hint hint*

Don't forget that NISA is also publishing Clan of Champions on PC (Steam) as well. While it's not a game from NIS, it opens possibilities for them to port some of their titles on PC platform...

@LilithTome You are AWESOME! Way to collect!! Cherry Tree High (being published in the US by Nyu Media) is totally on my list, too -- it looks like a funny, charming romantic-ish comedy with lots of good character dialogue and bright, attractive graphics. I'm hoping it'll be out this month! (http://nyu-media.com/products/cherry-tree-high-comedy-club/)

@TheSwordUser WOAH!! Disgaea! Yea, THAT would be EXCELLENT! I'd totally replay the whole thing on PC.

I'm also looking forward to Skullgirls (www.skullgirls.com), releasing sometime soon. I don't really do many fighter games, but this one just looks fun and creative!

I'm kinda with dkellis on the platforming, but it has been so long since I've played an YS game that I just don't remember. I think it'll be nostalgic. I need to go read the wiki and review where the series is right now. I vaguely remember a tower-slog to save a girl-goddess, and being really pissed at a bunch of people on that island.

Cheers,
-mra

Now that would be truly amazing.

In fact if Steam somehow had a miracle, and got Disgaea, Tales(of) and Persona, I don't think there's any words that could describe how happy I would be. It would be like rapture and I would probably just walk around the house smiling for several hours and celebrating. 'Giddy' would be a complete understatement. Not to mention an intense feeling of satisfaction and peace of mind. And probably one of the biggest pipe dreams right now that's related to something small like video games, and not something big like transhumanism, quantum computing, and regenerative medicine(in my lifetime). As to me, these are the three most important jRPG series right now. And personally, three of the most important video game series in my life. I've put thousands of hours of my life into each of them, a number that keeps growing. To say that I'm majorly attached to them, would also be an understatement. You could probably put me as close to the realm of 'extreme fan' as would be healthy.

So if Namco were to put their library into Steam, and not only popular titles like Dark Souls and Tekken, but titles we've been struggling to get in the west, like Tales of... and Nippon Ichi started releasing Disgaea and 'Makai Universe' games... the sheer bliss... would be just indescribable. It would feel like... the ascension of everything I love in video games. And all that would leave... would be Atlus, really, for three of the most important and beloved companies I have in video gaming. I already own Disagea games, for so many platforms. I already own the first, "Darkness", for the PlayStation 2, Nintendo DS, and PSP/Vita. But I'd gladly buy several more copies if they released it for Steam.

And if... if they ever put Tales of Symphonia... on the PC... on Steam. I... I.. I would go nuts. I think I would would buy 20 copies on day one if I could afford it, and send copies to all my friends. Just imagining such a monumental thing happening puts a smile on my face that will likely last all day. In fact, if Namco so much as put a Kickstart program for the gaming coming with a decent port to the PC and Steam, I think I would put a whole $2,000 or more of my hard earned money into it. Because the prospect of having the game on Steam is more valuable to me than having a supercomputer in my home. Tales of Symphonia was literally a life changing experience for me. On par with Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy IV, Final Fantasy VI, and other gaming experiences that were absolutely precious to my life. It may seem extreme, and even stupid, but Tales of Symphonia was one of the most precious experiences I've ever had on this earth that's grounded in some kind of media. I view it like a video gaming Mona Lisa that must be remembered for ages to come.

This better happen some day.

The only game that I'd really like a PC release for, barring games that haven't had an English release, is GrimGrimoire, and that's because it's an RTS.

@ LillithTome

Welllll, PC Gamer reported in February that an "informed source" (make of that what you will) suggested to them that there is a strong possibility in 2012 that we may see Catherine on the PC. That would be a start for the Atlus catalogue on steam, and if it did well... (It's just a shame that Catherine is pretty mediocre, but it might have a larger audience on PC than on ecksbawkz)

@Reikken

If GrimGrimoire ever got a pc release, I would pick that up so fast, you wouldn't even see me. That game was at it's core a fantastic take on the RTS genre using a vertical 2d plane, but was ultimately flawed due to it being on the ps2 and lacking a functional control scheme that is required for the genre. If it had multiplayer, control groups, mouse and keyboard controls, and got rid of the freeze screen to move around, that game could be so fantastic. I'd say it could be to Starcraft like Guilty Gear is to Street Fighter, though that might be taking it a bit far.

Just to note, little birdies are tellin' me that there's even more Japanese stuff comin' to the PC this year that isn't even formally announced yet. And this doesn't even have anything to do with what we're working on~
