Localization Suggestion: Princess Maker
« on: February 06, 2012, 02:18:31 PM »
I know this is a really long stretch.  The people responsible for the localization of the second game went bankrupt, and as far as I know, there are no plans to localize any of the other Princess Maker games.  Princess Maker 4 is currently on PC and has been out for several years... as far as I know, again, no english companies has the license to localize the game.

It's a long stretch because I don't know if it's licensed or not and I'm not even sure if CF is willing to do a non-indie game title.  Getting the license for the game might cost a lot of money since they have a PSP and DS version of the game (As well as PC).

It's just a suggestion, I would adore a CF released localization of PM if it was possible.

Methinks, if it was possible we'd probably see Carpe Fulgur doing something about it by now.

But, nope, nothing. Princess maker is a big licensing mess (at least the 2nd game). Besides, there are certain...implications going with the series. You know, little girls and you're the father of said girls and that kind of crap. It wouldn't work out.

Also, Princess Maker is owned by Gainax. GAINAX. I don't think that Carpe Fulgur can afford licensing that.

Hm... Gainax huh? Oh well, it was worth a shot.  It's a shame because the series probably won't ever be translated at this rate...

It seems like the issue with the game was more with finding a publisher/distributor, rather than any sort of license agreements with Gainax.
http://www.softegg.com/products/pm2/index.html

Online distribution would be a perfect solution for that problem, but according to that article somebody else already has the rights to the games. A shame, because it's a fun game and I'd like to play the rest of the series.

Princess Maker 2 is out of the question anyway, since it won't run on anything newer than windows 98 (natively).
There's that refreshed version, but I'm not sure if it will work.

About 4 and up...assuming that nobody will mind nature of these game...

...anybody for passing the hat round for funding licence from Gainax?

I think the problem is CF convincing Gainax to even consider CF seriously... among funding to actually buy the license.  The other worry is that PM4 has, I believe, professional voice acting.  This might cost big $$$$ to get the rights for.  Yet, that hasn't stopped CF from choosing alternatives.

As for issues with PM4, the only issue is that it features underage girls (like that was ever a problem for CF) and you can still marry your adoptive daughter (which might be a problem).

Otherwise, I don't see much in the terms of content problems.  PM4 doesn't have any nudity in it unlike PM2, but the freedom of PM2 is not in PM4.  For example, you can't work your daughter to death, it's just not possible.  The game, however, features a variety of in game events that need to be triggered to get different endings.  Not to mention your daughter is an oh so adorable blondie.

I doubt any contributions will help in obtaining this endeavor but... *passes hat around*

Well, there are some in Onechanbara, in Hyperdimension Neptunia, in Deathsmiles, in X Blades, Pangya, etc.
I don't think young girls are really an issue.

Forgive my ignorance, but what does Princess Maker have in it that is so controversial?

Well, in either case, I'm sure there are years worth of more important titles for Carpe Fulgur to work on.

There are some suggestive endings, where your daughter can become stuff like a prostitute, bondage queen, concubine; and also an ending where you can marry your adopted daughter. Also there's some implied rape, and minor nudity (which most likely would have been edited out of the final version).

Oh, my, that is a little more on the controversial and slight bit creepy side, then.

Well, I'm sure someone out there will be interested in officially localizing a title like Princess Maker, someday. But it shouldn't be Carpe Fulgur.

Those are all potential endings in Princess Maker 2

Princess Maker 4 doesn't include endings like that, for the most part.  Most of the controversial jobs like Cabaret and sleazy was replaced with Maid Bar and Cosplay Cafe.

In other words, there's not much to worry about in PM4... PM2... yeah... worry :V

Princess Maker 2, and all of it's ups and downs, in a nutshell.

This LP is one of the ones that got me posting regularly on SomethingAwful (which led to the genesis of Carpe Fulgur), no lie.

That being said, the Princess Maker games are pretty much a no-go. For starters, after the huge mess that was the PM2 "release", I'm fairly sure Gainax is no longer shopping the games around. Secondly, any game before PM5 would be too old anyway - even PM4 would likely need some patching to work 100% on WinVista/7 machines. And of course PS2/PSP titles are still a no-go for us, especially with the PSP literally on the way out and Sony focusing 100% of its energy on trying to make the Vita a success with dedicated software.

Finally, while I have to admit Steam has proven pretty receptive to our offerings up to this point, I... think this would be a tough sell to get onto that particular platform. Even if the "skeevy" aspect that the earlier PM titles were (in)famous for has been toned down in PM4 and 5, I still think it wouldn't really go over well and get accepted. And I'm going to be honest: if Steam doesn't want to carry a title at all, we can't move on it because otherwise it wouldn't sell enough.

So I'm going to have to shoot this suggestion down. Sorry!
