In fact, I hate to say it, but the Western developed game Magical Diary doesn't look all that well drawn. Looking like it was drawn in the sort of style people on Deviantart often have when they're just starting to learn how to draw anime but have a lot to learn and a long way to go.

That's pretty much the truth of it. Take a look at the rest of Hanako's stuff; its all the same deal.  I was honestly more surprised to see Magical Diary on Steam than I was when I heard Recettear was on Steam.

Not to mention the "Korean wave" is starting to hit Steam. Steam didn't used to be an MMORPG platform, but now it seems absolutely loaded with them coming over. And pretty much half of all MMORPGs are anime and from Korea.

From what I can gather Valve has a deal with Nexon and Perfect World Int. to port as many of their licensed MMOs to Steam as possible. As for the others, like Star Trek and LoTR, you can thank DC Online for that. When it switched to F2P and got hosted on Steam, its profits skyrocketed. Other developers saw that and, well, follow-the-leader happened. It's been working pretty well, apparently.

The reason we don't see more games like Japanese indie games on Steam is probably a market issue, yeah. Just judging from the "games being played" portion you can tell that Steam is geared towards marketing to the FPS-loving competitive demographic that plagues-I mean that takes up the majority of the market these days. Games about cute girls doing cute things are bound to be either ignored, or in some sad cases, ridiculed for reasons entirely unrelated to the content within.

But hey, what can you do. I'll keep buying this stuff no matter what happens or what store its in. Steam, GOG, Amazon, etc. Whatever.

STO (and Champions Online, for that matter) actually came out on Steam at launch when it was subscription-based and still owned by Atari. (I know this because I bought it at launch.) Of course, now they're both part of Perfect World.

DCUO is kind of a latecomer when it comes to F2P-ness and MMO-on-Steam. I think Dungeons and Dragons Online was the leader in terms of hybrid F2P models (ie has F2P and sub options).

I've been on Steam practically since it launched and still managed to forget about STO being on there when it was released. Thanks for clarifying that.

I only really paid attention to all those F2P MMOs after the news over DCUO becoming really popular after going F2P. I still haven't heard anything about D&D online other than "don't play it", so that's also surprising.

And Shira Oka is terrible. Great to watch someone LP, but hilariously awful if you try and play it.
Still my favorite anime style indie game.

(And yes, I prefer it to CFs games.)

Anyway, I don't really feel like forum hopping much so I'm outta here.  See y'all somewhere else.

I'm worried about Cherry Tree High Comedy Club now. I've been waiting for it to come out on Steam to get it. Just how Americanized is it?

Protagonist who has the ability to walk from her dorm, to her school, to the "market district", to the movie theater, to the dock with a museum,to the shrine, to in front of the house that is clearly eastern built:

Protagonist: "Man it sure is weird having this shrine in the middle of America"
Shrine Maiden: "Ya it was a gift from so and so after a thing happened"

I hope they don't translate Miko/Shrine maiden as "Gypsy" ... o.o;

So they're pretending it's in America when it very clearly takes place in Japan.

That's not cool. I'll buy it anyway, because, I mean, the doujin market needs money ect., and my only other choice would be to import it. But that doesn't make me happy.

And don't people realize this isn't going to make them any fans? Heck, America isn't the only place outside of Japan that likes anime and buys these types of games. The general message is, "people don't want to play a game about Japanese people, they would rather play a game about Americans". And that they don't want references to Japanese culture, but references to American culture is a-ok. Even though it is an anime game called "Cherry Tree High Comedy Club".

I wonder if people complain enough they can patch it. Because this should not have happened.

I remember someone said that Nyu media's bussiness market is to sell japanese games to those people who are afraid of japanese culture.

By localizing the most Japanese games ever?

Sigh... maybe this "Nyu-Media" isn't as much of a friend in the industry as I thought.

Someone? As in someone who works at Nyu-Media?

Oh, well then, it's not verified. I'm going to hope that maybe it can be patched. And maybe fan-modders will be willing to actually put some work into modifying the text. But at the very least I would be for pressuring them to patch it.

On the subject of anime games or things similar to what one gets out of Carpe Fulgur, from anime, to Japanese, to female protagonists to ect., whatever someone is looking for.

I've got some sorta news that some people are going to love and some people are going to hate. Probably the most overrated jRPG ever, the one overshadows a lot of the best jRPGs out there. The game and franchise that everyone loves and loves to hate, Final Fantasy VII is being re-released to Windows 7. And everybody is pressuring them to put it on Steam and they're probably going to do it. Thus adding to another jRPG on Steam.

I know that a lot of jRPG fans cringe when they hear of Final Fantasy. But it did seem like a relevant event to mention here. And I'm sure it's still interesting to some people. They're making an effort it would appear to make this a much more solid release than the old PC port. So fixing that is pretty good. Also, Square Enix isn't the best company and has kinda drug the name of jRPGs through the mud in recent year, but they do have a lot of good games under their belt I've always had a little desire to see on Steam.

If this does well, they might bring over some other games that don't already have a PC version. It'd be pretty cool to see games like Dragon Quest VIII on Steam someday, I have to say. Heck, for all of the bad endgame plot development of Star Ocean 3, it wouldn't be too bad to see on Steam, either. Then there's all those great SNES titles like Final Fantasy VI, Final Fantasy IV, Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana I've always dreamed of having on Steam. And Brave Fencer Musashi, and Einhänder, and Xenogears...

I kind of hope it actually does well, just for the prospect of other games I rather like being on Steam. It's no Persona or Disgaea or Tales, but it'd be pretty cool. If you feel the same way, go bug Square Enix to put Final Fantasy VII on Steam.

Buy it? I will do no such thing. It comes with paid cheatcodes... not something I want to support in a billion years.

I'm just going to edit my last sentence out before I get e-murdered. Though I don't see what's particularly wrong with cheating sometimes. God mode playing is fun sometimes, just like super challenge is fun sometimes. I support more options in video games rather than less. But I know that implying that buying something from Square Enix might ever lead to good things is just asking to be tarred and feathered. At least if you care at all, bug them to put it on Steam. I for one would love to see the Dragon Quest games and Brave Fencer Musashi on my Steam account.

Now, before I get barbecued, I have even better news. NiGHTS into Dreams... is getting an HD remake, and of course, knowing SEGA, that includes a Steam release.

The Announcement Trailer.

I think you misunderstand me. I'm all for cheats... but in the case of this particular remake, you have to *pay* for them. As in, you pay X amount of dollars, and Squenix gives you full hp, mana, cash, materia, whatever.

That's just very much not ok.

Oh..... I see now.

Yeah, that's not so great. Then again my beloved Bandai Namco did that with Tales of Vesperia on the XBOX 360 and I proudly own the heck out of that game. In fact I own 3 copies of Tales of Graces f. Hey, when you can't Kickstarter...

Well, I think that some people can look past that fact. I didn't even have any idea that was even happened, I thought it was just some bonus they were throwing in. I probably won't be getting it unless it comes out on Steam. But I do hope it does. I get the feeling that if this does well, they might actually start bringing over stuff that doesn't have PC. I'm not a big Square Enix fan, getting Tales or Persona games on Steam would make me so much happier than any Final Fantasy could possibly make me. But I'd still thoroughly enjoy being able to just click a single button on my Steam account and have Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King start up.

Edit: I've done some research, and it sounds like what you're saying might just be a rumor. And disproven misinformation now.
On the Square Enix Europe twitter, they had this to say about the matter.
https://twitter.com/SQUARE_ENIX_EU/status/220802247863443456
"No where on the website does it suggest this is a paid for feature. Details to come but I think you'll be pleasantly..."
Or basically just saying "No, that's not the case." without actually saying it.
