^Hakouki.  Thanks, but I'll pass on the otome game.  =D
I wonder how it did.

Speaking of visual novels, I recently finished Katahane (fan translation), which was amazing.
Except the H.  That was totally tacked on afterwards.

I am thinking that perhaps it is those that prevent any "mainstream" translations (which I admit I can't really define).  None of any I have seen in any VN to date add anything to the story that a simple relationship scene could have done just as well or better.
And the presence of non-minor content means cutting away alot of the potential playerbase, if any exist.

And far FAR too many good VNs have H content that only get in the way.

Ataru:
And since the all-ages versions of all the VNs tend to only get released on console, and since the console companies are all pretty much against VNs in America... you get an unwinnable situation. No (few) non-H VNs for PC, and the non-H VNs for console that can't get localized.

Steam still seems pretty anti anime style games overall.  Sure, CF is there, but there's other stuff like Shira Oka doesn't get on there.  (Nobody mentioned that yet, right?  Shira Oka is great.)

Impulse has a few that I haven't checked out since it seems like they're made for girls.  Not always a deal breaker for me but lessens interest considerably anyway.

On that same note, CTHCC is already up on Impulse so if it doesn't show up on Steam I guess we have our answer...they'd rather sell retro/pixel art crap than anime style games o.o

(I'm also fond of Blade Kitten myself.  It's not the greatest, but it's entertaining.)

LilithTome:
I certainly hope that isn't the case. I love anime games, obviously.

Also they're becoming more frequent with not only Carpe Fulgur, but with stuff like Ys games, Analogue: A Hate Story and other instances here and there.

In fact, I hate to say it, but the Western developed game Magical Diary doesn't look all that well drawn. Looking like it was drawn in the sort of style people on Deviantart often have when they're just starting to learn how to draw anime but have a lot to learn and a long way to go.

Not to mention the "Korean wave" is starting to hit Steam. Steam didn't used to be an MMORPG platform, but now it seems absolutely loaded with them coming over. And pretty much half of all MMORPGs are anime and from Korea.

And it still made it to Steam. Maybe just not enough people who make or license anime style games have considered Steam. And stick to "anime culture" platforms and more traditional means than the Steam trend. Admittedly, the culture of Steam certainly does look off putting to an anime fan. And is part of the reason I put off joining Steam for a long, long time. It just did not look like it carried and wanted to carry my types of games.

And after having been there a while, I've started to doubt some of my initial suspicions. A lot of Japanese developers just don't seem interested in Steam. And a lot of Western developers who like making games in that style don't seem to be that interested in the platform, or are making games in a format not very compatible with the Steam overlay, like RPG Maker. And that while that's happening, Western developers are flooding the platform with games that are, well, pretty much the antithesis of what Japanese developers and fans like in games. I think that if a few things changed, Steam would look a bit more like, say, the PlayStation Network, and a bit more friendly towards anime games.

If the Steam(Valve) folks do feel that way, though, I sure hope things change. There are multi-million selling anime games out there. For instance, Pokemon. It'd be not only our loss, but theirs.

Actually, CTHCC, eXceed and even EtherMaster are all slated to come out on Steam - the thing holding them back is something else (Publisher woes). I believe eXceed is finally cleared for launch though. I'm subscribed to Nyu Media on Facebook so you find out the low down.

And Shira Oka is terrible. Great to watch someone LP, but hilariously awful if you try and play it.
