Ya it's kind of a crappy translation. One of those "We have no idea our audience would be Japanophiles and feel the need to over Westernize the shit out of the game for people who won't realize what we are doing." kind of deals.

Sabin Stargem:
A step forward :  Localization that suits the audience (reworking speech and jokes to make sense and to get their point across)
Two steps back:  Altering the setting to be "culturally correct".   :P

Actually, this can vary depending on the developer in question. For example, as far as I'm aware, the developers of the Ace Attorney games (one of the prime examples of "extreme" localization in terms of name-changing and whatnot) by and large approve of the changes made to the games overseas, because Shu Takumi in particular wants to make sure that the games are relateable to any audience experiencing the games.

I'm obviously not privy to the internal details of how Nyu Media and Atelier773 agreed to handle Manken, but if a client (such as 773) suggested themselves that we take an "extreme localization" route with a project, we'd be receptive to such a request, if we ourselves thought it fit the project. This is the sort of thing that needs to be handled with care, though, for sure.

I know, it's a late reply. Depending on what you see as mainstream, maybe Hakuouki would fall under this category as a recent release. I bought it, but haven't had the time to play it yet. As for how well it did: no idea.

Personally i'm currently reading Clannad. I bought the original game and installed a fantranslated version on it. I'm reading for 30 to 90 minutes every evening in bed on my laptop, using a guide. After i don't know how many months now, i'm on my last playthrough (which should unlock After Story).

And i already have Kanon and Littel Busters waiting with the same treatment (japanese DVD at home, fan translation installed)

Yeah, just most of them aren't on Steam. Or really localized at all in the West. Carpe Fulgur and others on this frontier have a lot of things available to them.

I really hope to see, after XSEED has done so well bringing Ys games to Steam, we get to games like Gurumin come there. It is much like a lot of the awesome cute games starring strong female protagonists Carpe Fulgur has done by chance. And is a really cool game, in my opinion. I'm also rather interested in seeing Zwei II Plus hit the platform.

I'm worried about Cherry Tree High Comedy Club now. I've been waiting for it to come out on Steam to get it. Just how Americanized is it?
