Absolutely dreadful performance
« on: January 31, 2012, 05:39:59 AM »
When I open the game's menus the game slows down to single digit fps, the controls become unresponsive and I have to hit a key dozen or more times before the input is registered.
Sometimes this happens during dialogue too, but not very often. I am constantly getting framerate issues when something is moving on the screen. This also results in sluggish controls. The game is only utilizing 25% cpu(I assume because it only makes use of one core, I have a quad) and ~50-60MB ram. This shit shouldn't be happening.
It happens all the time, I've tried all graphics and RAM option combinations. Sometimes the menus are responsive for a few seconds before they slow down to a crawl, then they will stay sluggish despite opening and closing all windows then one time there's no problem for some amount of time. It seems to be completely random.

I've seen a similar complaint in the Demo Responces thread above, does it happen after you played the game for a while, or always as you open the menu? Does it decrease/disappear if you restart the game?

Good point, I will update the OP. It happens all the time, even on a fresh start, in all resolution and RAM modes.

kk. I've also *checks* Seen something by SpaceDrake:
If you are getting bad slowdown in Fortune Summoners, try using a setting other than use all VRAM! Using all of it isn't necessarily better!

Worth a shot :P

EDIT: The only other thing I can link you to some other guys having problems is the fact that everyone seems to be using 64 bit windows. While that can be conicidence (And other people with 64 bits don't have any problems at all) there may be some kind of combination which bites.

But anyway, I'm not in any way related to CF, at most I'm trying to connect the dots.

My VRAM usage is setted at normal use and I still lag a lot in the menu.

Im starting to think that this issue only happens on Windows 7 rigs, because I don't get that problem under XP.

Maybe disable Aero and run this game in compability mode (640x480 option in properties-> compability tab). If it's VRAM issue, this should help a bit.

I'm using x64 7, and everything works fine.

Maybe it's the RAM or video card?

From being too powerful?

5870, 8gb ram, 955 @ 3.3 ghz. Win7 Ultimate 64 bit

I also get menu slow downs. Oddly enabling the game to only use one core made the menus work perfectly fine, but only for a minute or two then they slowed down worse than ever. It's clearly either memory leak with the overlapping menus or it just doesn't know how to handle multicore cpus

Except that we've tested the game on multi-core CPUs just fine.

This one is really driving us batshit since it never came up in testing and we can't reproduce it at all. At best we can figure it's SOMETHING with Win7, maybe, but the game still works fine on multiple Win7 machines on our end.

Best I can do is also post other programs i have running, but I don't see why they would cause slowdown only when menus are up. The game plays perfect otherwise.

Some big programs would be rainmeter, ultramon, and MSE. Not in resources they use but in how they affect the computer.

Haha, I don't envy you. Well, I do kind of because the game runs on your test machines, but I don't want to be in your shoes. At all. I'm still experimenting to see if I can get it to run better but I'm nearing the point where I just want to cheat and install the game on my virtual XP machine.

If you're running multiple monitors, try disabling all your secondary displays.  Worked like a charm for me -- no more menu lag.  Not exactly ideal, but it's a workaround for the moment.

Actually, could it be a hybrid graphics issue? I recall Steam games having problems with those...

Anyway I'm playing the game on an Asus 1015PN running on an Atom 550, with Nvidia ION.  On the ION side of things,  Optimus is using the graphics card to run FS. Well at least the tray icon that comes with the driver says I am doing that...

I do get random 5 second "pauses" sometimes, when going through doors, or jumping onto crates. Not often enough to annoy me, tho, and so far I haven't got one during battle yet...

(I also have a desktop running an old AM2 3600+ and an 9500GT, but that doesn't matter - it should work flawlessly on *that* on MAX settings, and it does. Funny because on the laptop I get to choose to disable VRAM, but in the desktop *I do not, the VRAM options are greyed out*).

I should attempt to disable Optimus for FS and see what happens, but I can't do it now...

I'm getting some moderate menu performance issues, too, and I'm running Windows XP. It's mostly when toggling between characters when viewing the "Status" screens.
