Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale / Re: Ideas for a sequel/expansion?
« on: October 05, 2010, 08:44:34 AM »
I think we are both merchants and adventures. If you add more rpg features (they're not mmorpg features), you can flesh out the rpg aspect more. I'd like it.

But those that prefer the merchant side don't have to play the adventurer.

I'd like to see:
  • Adventurers selling (multiple) items they may have come across in dungeons (at several times their worth)
  • Wandering salesmen selling rare items at high prices
  • Town festivities that require Recettear to gather x amount of certain food/ingredient/item combinations

I like the endless dungeon idea, as well as the quests, to deepen the rpg aspect of the game.

  • The inventory count (you have x amount of this item) is incorrect most of the time.
  • When throwing a web as Charme on a bomb set by a trapped chest, the bomb turns back into a creature (but will still explode)
  • Toadstools that burrow in and out of the ground are unaffected by Charme's web

At [0G/0L] Recette's left eye is just a couple pixels down-left of the center of the crosshairs, see screenshot: http://www.flickr.com/photos/14240864@N02/4990826178/

I'd hate to be pedantic, but that's her right eye ;)

Did you check the Japanese wiki? It might be of some use to you.

The save.dat is so huge (and empty) because it has savegames for all possible save slots (100).

Since you don't use most of those, they're just filled with blank data. Effectively, each save game is only about 180kb.

The data inside the save game is not obscured or encrypted. If people are interested, I can make a save game data viewer or editor.

Steam, Steam, Please be Steam...

If they also sell it here in carpe fulgur at the same price, I'll buy it directly from them, to show my <3 for indies.

Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale / Re: "English Patch"?

I offered to do some voice acting for the English translation, but unfortunately they're not looking for anyone (yet). It'd be a great game to do some acting for though :-)

I don't think console games will ever go away as long as there are people who are confused by their computers but still want to game. Plus, I don't like hauling my PC out to my living room to hook up to my TV or hauling a couch into my room to play my games from, but that may just be me :P

Activision is pushing for a PC based console that you could hook up to your TV. I'm very much for this (though I'm not a big fan of Activision).

I didn't like Torchlight much, but that's very possibly because it just copied FATE in almost every aspect of the game, except for some updated graphics and new monsters.

Porn is a no; I don't like porn in general and certainly wouldn't want it in my games.

Farland Symphony looks pretty good, and I'm certainly in for tactical rpgs as well! Looking online, Farland Symphony got some not so great reviews, but it did lead me to some other titles: Rance, Big Bang Age and Eien no Aselia, which look great. Thanks :-)

Edit: It appears those games contain porn too. Although Eien no Aselia has a 12+ version as well.

General Discussion / Re: Programming Language

The yoyo game engine seems pretty capable and doesn't require a lot of programming (but it allows it if you want to get deeper into it).

Don't get into VB though, learn a real language with real programming techniques: it'll help you a lot more down the line.

Thanks for the info. I know most or all of the games you mentioned, but I was really hoping there would be more translated games like this one (for the PC). I've played (and finished) Diablo 2, Sacred, FATE (not Torchlight because that's just a copy of FATE), Titan Quest and many others, but am looking for something lighter and more superficial, very much like the JRPGs you get on consoles.

Are there any similar games to Recettear on the PC?

Similar as in, JRPG type games with similar gameplay (but not the shop, because that's unique to recettear)?

Also, I been wanting to try 360 Controllers on PC, but I have very few games that would work well with it, mabye I should try Recettear someday. o.O

I've been using my PS2 controllers for years, and so far I've found no games that don't work well with them. They're really good.

Uhh... I think you know at least one language.  :o

Joking aside, I want to know too!

But if I were to start somewhere it'll have to be a easy language first, Java or something...

What makes you think Java is easy? (it isn't!)

If you want an easy language to start with, try Python. With PyGame you can even create games without much trouble.
